Submitting to directories is has been around since the beginning of time with the internet. The first thing to point out is that you will pretty much not get any traffic from submitting to directories. The time that directories gave you traffic is long gone. The real reason that you should submit to directories is pretty much for SEO and getting those high PR links. You should also learn to not submit to just any old directory. It should have a high enough page rank. Not just PR2 or PR3 because this is just all to normal. My personal limit for submitting to directories is it has to have at least a page rank of 4, nothing less. Next, with directories with paid links, my limit is even more strict. The paid directory should be well known, and have a very high page rank. Otherwise, if I bought a link from a small, low page rank directory, I would just be wasting my money.

Really when you have a made a new website, and it has many pages of content, and looks well done, it is time to start submitting to directories. A nice tip to submitting to directories faster, is to keep notepad open with the site’s description on it. That way you can just copy & paste it on instead of typing it up.

Just to make you feel better after reading this, here is a list of directory lists that I use when looking for good directories to submit to.

3. Best Catalog - Free Directory List

4. PR checker List - Free Directory List

More:

Well all of these sites should have this site on the top of their lists but this is just an addition to it. DMOZ is the god of all link directories. You have to try your best to get into this site. One tip that I will give is not to try and cheat the directory. Go into the sub category that fits your website perfectly. Don’t submit to a higher category just because it has a higher page rank. Page Rank is not the whole package of DMOZ.

DMOZ is owned by Google, they own it and run it. What I have learned is that when you are listed on DMOZ, you get listed higher in Google’s search engine. It is also favored by other top search engines. This is the one directory that will actually still give traffic by making your search engine rankings way better. Other directories do improve your search engine ranking, but not as substantially as DMOZ.

Another Directory that is great to submit to but is paid. That is the Yahoo Directory. People have seen great results with this directory. You do need to pay a good bit of cash but it is worth it, especially if you own a web based business or service. You will get the money back in sales fast with Yahoo Directory.

Those are essentially the best directories around. You make it into those directories you are pretty much set. Also a last minute tip:

1. Learn to be picky about directories - Just submitting to any low end directory is not the smartest thing. Google is giving less credibility to directories, so only high pr, strong, directories will help you. Week and low pr directories will only hurt you.
